Handblown

Glass

  • Every item we make starts as a blob of molten glass on the end of a blowpipe or punty rod. A piece is made start to finish in one single process. It can be grueling to work on a larger piece sometimes for more than an hour without being able to take even a short break. The weight and the heat of a piece of glass grow together; the bigger piece you make the heavier and hotter it is on the glassblower.

  • We use hand tools to shape the glass (it is way too hot to touch while we work on it). All pieces are shaped using these simple tools on the molten glass. The tools we use are the same tools used for hundreds of years of traditional glassblowing.

  • The glass must be kept over 1000 degrees as we work it. If it becomes too cold it will crack. The longer a piece is worked the more times we need reheat it to soften the glass and to keep the temperature above the critical point.

  • With each item being made entirely by hand and one at a time, there are no two pieces alike. Near the end of the process we make subtle manipulations to the glass to finish it to the desired shape.
